3 Potential Side Effects of Taking DHEA Supplements

WebMD explains why potential side effects might be an issue for people who want to try DHEA supplements:

“Since DHEA levels decline with age, some researchers speculate that supplementing your body’s falling levels of the hormone might help fight aging. And some small studies have reported positive anti-aging effects from the use of DHEA supplements. But a similar number of studies have reported no effect. “

Before considering taking DHEA supplements, it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects. From high blood pressure to changes in male body composition, there are many potential risks associated with using the supplement. In this article, we will discuss the three most common side effects of taking DHEA.

Acne Breakouts

Short-term use of DHEA supplements may lead to acne breakouts due to its testosterone-stimulating effects. Since high levels of testosterone can trigger an increase in oil production on the skin, it can create a perfect breeding ground for pimples and other skin issues. If you begin taking DHEA and notice breakouts appearing on your skin, reduce your supplement intake or contact a medical professional for advice.

Other potential side effects of DHEA may include weight gain, hair loss, mood swings and fatigue. Some people experience more pronounced reactions than others, and it can depend on a variety of factors like how much you’re taking, how often you take it, your age and your overall health. As with any dietary supplement, talk to your doctor before incorporating DHEA into your daily routine.

Hormonal Imbalances

Another potential side effect of taking DHEA supplements is the risk of hormone-related side effects. In some cases, people can develop a hormonal imbalance as a result of taking too much DHEA. While symptoms may vary based on the individual, common signs of this type of imbalance include changes in libido, hair growth, or weight gain. If you notice any of these symptoms after starting a DHEA supplement, contact your doctor immediately for guidance.

High doses of DHEA can also cause a spike in circulating androgen hormones, such as testosterone. This can lead to side effects like oily skin, aggressive behavior, or hair loss. Additionally, some women may develop male characteristics such as facial hair or deepening of the voice when taking DHEA. If you have any of these symptoms, contact your doctor for help determining if DHEA is the cause and to develop an alternative plan for managing your health condition.

Fluid Retention and Gastrointestinal Issues

While the benefits of DHEA are positive in many respects, we always want to maintain awareness of side effects and always consult a doctor before we use any supplements that impact our bodies at the hormonal level. WebMD notes concerns in people with health conditions, “DHEA supplements show some promise for easing mild to moderate depression. But more research is needed.”

The article goes on to say, “In a small, six-week study, researchers from the National institute of Mental health found that treatment with DHEA supplements helped relieve mild to moderate depression that occurs in some middle-aged people. DHEA may also be effective for improving aging skin in the elderly” (2022).

So, while the medical community does have solid proof that benefits are the experience of some, they still acknowledge that more research needs to be done.

In Closing

Another side effect of taking DHEA is fluid retention, or bloat. In some cases, people may experience dry mouth, nausea, and/or abdominal discomfort. These symptoms can be uncomfortable and can also make it difficult to concentrate so it’s important to monitor your intake closely if you develop any of these signs. If symptoms persist, contact your doctor for advice.

In some cases, DHEA can also cause disruption of the gastrointestinal system. Studies have linked long-term use of DHEA to gastrointestinal ulcers, heartburn, and constipation. Again, if any of these issues arise while taking DHEA, it is important to contact your doctor for advice. Additionally, individuals who take large amounts of this supplement are at an increased risk for these types of side effects and should proceed with caution.
